Example:  I’ve worn Sisterlocks for over 10 years.  I’ve lived in the same neighborhood all that time and have socialized with my neighbor on a regular basis, going to lunch, chatting at each other’s homes, etc.  Recently, while checking our mail together she made the comment, “Oh, you got your extensions put in longer this time, huh?!”

I let her know that this was my hair and not extensions.  I was so surprised that all this time she assumed this wasn’t my hair!

I’ve had the same experiences. It’s kind of funny that we don’t believe our natural hair will grow . . . I enjoy letting people know that I always wore my hair very short prior to getting Sisterlocks, so I too was surprised at how long my hair has grown since I stopped perming and pulling it with extensions. I like to turn it into a positive opportunity to share how happy I am with my natural hair.

I recently had a similar experience. My Sisterlocks come to the middle of my back. I’ve had them for 5 years. I was walking along with a casual acquaintance that I see every week. I told her that I liked her new hair cut. I mentioned that I was thinking about cutting my hair. Even though she has never seen me with any other style or weave, she looked at me and said: “How long is your real hair?” All this time I guess she thought I had extensions too. I was shocked. I looked at her and grabbed the ends and said: “My hair is THIS long. This is all my real hair.” She looked at me in disbelief and said: “Oh…” She kind of walked off like I was just one of those people who wouldn’t admit I had fake hair. It made me wonder how many other people make that assumption and never say so.

My mother asked me the same question even though she has seen me through every stage of sisterlocks growth and styling.
